* This is the modus mailing list * There isn't really a new look to Web Mail.
There is additional functionality and the addition of Modus Web Admin. It is this Admin interface that requires you to inform your users of changes as they might be overwhelmed by the settings page. I personally do not like the Vircom Web Mail GUI and feel that the way the system was written / implemented has resulted in an inability to customize the GUI to a satisfactory level. I have spent numerous hours inside the both the Web Mail code and the Web Admin elements. The Web Admin is a .Net application and uses a compiled code-behind DLL, hence hiding the code. In addition the system is based on User Controls which are pulled into the page and each off these files carries a modification warning. I am really hoping that Vircom will update the Web Mail system, and have said that I am willing to work with them on this project. I have my own ideas, as I am sure others have. Vircom really needs to hear these requests and plan a new version carefully. The new version should also be written from the ground up as opposed to trying to upgrade the existing version. I for one would like to see a Web Mail System that is easy to integrate with a company web site. Giving it a more consistent look and feel with the Provider / Hosts presence. This requires the system to have a modular design. In addition if the system was written to take advantage of other .Net Framework elements it could be exposed as a series of Web Services and hence have a series of modules that can be placed on a web site or integrated with a portal. I have stated that I have started work on such a project, but this is alongside my development of a web portal. I have [previously not stated this, but I have actually been working on this portal for sometime, and have also written a web based forum on the side. I plan on tying the Web Based Forum into the portal and Modus Mail. Perhaps I'll even try selling it to Vircom as they want to replace the Mailing Lists with a Web Based forum. My plan is to allow posts to a mailing list to get added to the Web Based forum, whilst having entries made on the web to also be sent through the mailing list. I know that Vircom have undergone some changes over the last few months, and I hope these changes are going to bring along a better Third-Party developer channel. The introduction of an 'Add-On' section to there Web Site would be a good start. However they need to produce some documentation for various elements of their products. For example, I am yet to see any documentation for the COM Objects used by the Web Mail system. If Vircom could provide this than it would be easier to get a group off people together to write and maintain a separate Web Mail project. I know this is a long post for this list and a bit of a rant, but I have been requesting certain things for ages, and whilst they might not be requested by the masses I am sure that if they were adopted more people would use them.
