Hi Adil,

You will lose the ability to utilise Whitelist / Blacklist functionality if you cluster Modus v3. Vircom is aware off this and a cluster version is as I am told a high priority.

The issue with clustering Modus Mail v3 is that there is no way to sync the SCA between the machines. Whilst the SCA pulls default values from Vircom the additional entries (your WL / BL’s and custom scripts) are stored locally on each server. If you don’t use this feature then it is very simple to ‘cluster’ Modus v3.

What you need is the following:

1). Load Balancing switch (should be able to handle session state)

2). A NAS or SAN

3). 2 or more Modus Servers

The key part of the design is that the Modus servers actually use the NAS or SAN via UNC paths as shared diskspace and hence locking issues should not be a problem. Ideally the two servers are not accessing the same data at the same time.

The load balancing switch takes care of receiving connections and passing them off to any off the attached Modus Servers. This is why the load balancer needs to be aware of session state as a connection to one server needs to remain on that server until terminated.

You would also need to house the Quarantine via MS SQL and this can be installed on one off the Modus Servers or another server (another server would be best). The Quarantine mailbox should be stored on the NAS or SAN and you will need to change the setting in the registry and use the full UNC path.

You will also need to change a setting to ensure the Last Message ID is not duplicated on the two servers and there is a registry key which alters the ‘B’ prefix that Modus uses as standard. Altering this to any ‘alpha’ character gives you 26 possibilities and hence you can run up to 26 servers.

If you need some more advice on setting this up you can drop me a mail.

Subject: [Modus] Cluster solution

Hi,

It's HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array 1000. Manual load balancing is ok by having two servers sharing the mailboxes. I agree it's odd that the NAS is not allowing sharing. If storage was sharable, then we wouldn't need clustering. I read about clusters using "distributed lock management" (DLM) but could find none for Windows.
