Sounds like ModusMail is having problems connecting to the database. Run
through the ODBC connection settings and test it at the end. In the process,
make sure that the default database for the login is in fact the correct
database. Or, if you've selected a database other than the default, make
sure it is the correct database.

Also, on a computer with the client network utilities installed, add a new
alias for the SQL Server (i.e. using the "Server Network Utility"). Add a
new SQL Server registration in Enterprise Manager using the new alias. Use
the same login user name and password that ModusMail uses. Ensure that you
are able to connect to the database and listed the ModusMail quarantine
tables. Right click the tables in question and chose "Open Table" > "Return
All Rows".

If you run into problems with either of the above, you can check the actual
network connectivity by going to a command prompt (while sitting at the mail
server) and typing:

  telnet sql.server.name 1433

If you get a blank screen, then you're connected. If you get a connection
error, then you've got a network issue (maybe a firewall or NAT in between).
It may take a moment for the error to appear. The blank screen should happen
instantaneously. Of course, if you've changed the default SQL server port,
then you have to alter the command line accordingly.

Other possible issues could involve a dual homed box. If either your mail
server or SQL server has two separate NICs, you may be having issues. We've
seen Windows 2000 talk out the wrong network card for seemingly inexplicable
reasons. Consequently, we tend to avoid dual homed boxes except in really
simple configurations (private and public networks, routers and firewalls,
etc.).

If you're using a DNS or Netbios name in your ODBC settings, trying pinging
the name (again, from the mail server) and make sure the name resolves. If
you're using named pipes, try TCP/IP. We've had better luck with, and it's
routable.

Subject: [Modus] Quarantine Database

* This is the modus mailing list *

Hello, I have the quarantine database in SQL and it has been working
fine for 2 days and all of a sudden we are getting the error below when
we try and access the Quarantine database from webmail. We also get an
error if we try and access it from the Modus Administrator. Sql server
seems to be up and running.

Webmail Error
An internal error occurred. Please try again later and contact your ISP
if the problem persists.
Description :
Code : &H800E03E9

ModusAdmin Error
The connection to the database cannot be established.

I have stopped and restarted both Sql server and all modusmail
services. Still did not fix it.

Any Ideas ?

Thanks
