I have a pair of users (my boss and our accountant) who just got new Dell's
with XP Pro connected to our Internet network thru a Watchgaurd Firebox II.
One uses Outlook 98 and the other Outlook Express 6. Both have been having
problems downloading attachments. 1-2MB attachments at first would time
out, we jacked the timeout setting clear up to 5 minutes and that made the
time-out clear up, but it would take 30 minutes to download a 2MB
attachment. I put a packet sniffer on and watched the traffic to one of the
machines and while it was downloading the email I would see a burst of POP3
traffic then it would stop for a while, maybe like a minute, then another
burst, then stop. This would continue untill the message was fully
received. I saw errors on the switch port and my first incliniation was
that that it was a speed/duplex issue, we hard set both machines to 100/Full
to match the switch and now everything seems to be working.

My real question is that before I made the ethernet change I ran other
throughput tests using FTP and that seemed normal, very good transfer rate
and no errors on the switchport. Watching the data flow with the sniffer the
FTP chugged along just as I would expect, not like the POP3 traffic we were
seeing. We used Q-Check also and that looked very good as well. I'm
confused. I don't feel like the issue has been resolved and when my boss
gets back Friday I would like to have a definent answer for him.

Anyone have any ideas?

Email me off-list if appropriate.

Thanks!
