Everyone,

My Findings....This same issue occurs in Modus Gate Version 2.1 Build(268). Whenever
the system cannot connect to the update site this error occurs and then spam messages
begin to pile up in the spool/spam folder. The first message in the spam folder has
the exact time date stamp as the time when the update was attempted (This is
consistent). For a time period we were having issues connecting to Vircom's site and
we would have thousands of spam messages pile up. Once we were able to connect things
would resume normally. If you start and stop the Modus admin service it would process
the messages but if it could not connect to the site the whole process would repeat. I
adjusted the update interval to 30 minutes to try and alleviate some of the problem
but we still occasionally have connectivity issues. I have talked with tech support
and they are not going to fix this in this version (I was told) and should upgrade to
version 3 (Build 277). BUT, we are currently testing version 3 on a much smaller scale
and have been experiencing a higher rate of false positives that some of you have also
eluded to. We think 277 is great but are trying to put a roll out plan in place that
would not impact our customer base so drastically. An idea we had would be to use
version 268 to take the brunt of the traffic and then forward valid domain mail to
another server running version 277 which would then deliver to the customer. The
customer could then more effectively deal with amount of spam vs. taking a drink from
a fire hose. Version 268 does a good job of knocking down a ton of spam and have had
near 0 false positives but it doesn't catch everything. We feel we can catch the rest
(an additional 20-30%) by using version 277 and actually implement the reporting
feature that would make it very effective. Long term this isn't going to be an option
because it would require additional server licenses but we can't go from 268 to 277
and take the beating from 10,000 users using this service. If anyone else falls into
this category I would like to hear some of your ideas or experiences.

Thanks,
Greg

Subject: [Modus] (FROM VIRCOM) Errors during anti-virus updates - ASV versions

* This is the modus mailing list *

Hi everyone,

We have investigated a but that was reported about an error message that
came up occasionally in the Modus console (for ASV versions). The error was
something like this : (Result: Error Updating '!s!' (0x!08X!)).

This has been investigated and the message is the result of an update not
working properly because either your Modus server could not connect to the
update site, or that update site was down, or the update side was busy, etc
(normal error cases that happen in real life). The bug resides in the fact
that the error message is not displayed properly. In other word, it should
display "Server busy" instead of "0x08x!".

The resolution for this is fairly simple: either use the "Update now" button
or wait until the next automatic update (I recommend you set it to 15 minute
updates) like you would if the english message was displayed.

Regards,
