Suneel,
I'm afraid that I'm well beyond "triple checking" the tempdb file sizes :)
The db file and the transaction log file for tempdb are definitely set to "grow indefinitely" and are sitting in a partition with (now) 2.5 GB of space.
The tempdb DB file has gradually grown to 2.3GB (used to be only 40MB a few days ago) and the transaction log file is now sitting at 85 MB (used to be only 7 MB).
We have added another (very aggressive) DNSBL to our setup to try and relieve the load on modusgate (DNSBL are done before mail gets to modusgate) and SQL is able to (barely) cope with the load, now about 40% less than before.
However, I'm still seeing regular entries in the SQL server logs, giving the usual 'Transaction log file for tempdb is out of disk space. blah blah...'
Given that this SQL server is used _only_ for the modus quarantine, I'm almost ready to give up and simply nuke the box and start again, but I'm afraid I might hit the exact same problem.
Any ideas either way?

Thanks again for your help,
Lapo

P.S. Next time I'm in London, I'll have to buy you a beer!

Yes it does look correct indicating that no open transactions were
running on the server.

The only suggestion I am left with is to tell you to triple check that
you are allowing the TempDB to automatically grow. In the meantime I
will see if I can find out anything else.

If the opposite of pro is con, then what must be the opposite of
progress?

Suneel,
I tried the command you suggested.
The response was as follows:

Transaction information for database 'ModusDB'.
Oldest active transaction:
SPID (server process ID) : 61
     UID (user ID) : -1
     Name : implicit_transaction
     LSN : (16936:112486:1)
     Start time : Jan 19 2004 1:14:43:717PM
DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your
system administrator.

This looks fine to me, given that the query was run at 1:14 pm.
Is that correct?

Thanks for your help.

Lapo
