The weird error message you are seeing is an actual error message not being displayed correctly. It is not the cause of the problem but only the result. It normally should say something brilliant like "not able to connect to remote server" or something. It's hard to pinpoint the problem with this error messages, but I would try restarting the services first and if that doesn't work, rebooting the server.
