Michael,
I'm not sure this is a true statement anymore. In my case, I was running 273
and received the common panel error when trying to update. When I checked
the date of the Definition file it was NOT up-to-date. So in my case, I was
not getting updates.
An upgrade to 282 fixed the problem.
Unless I'm missing something and my problem was unique, you may want to
check into this again.

Hi,
Thanks for reporting this. We're aware of the fact that some people may not
get updates, whether Norman forgot to distribute it or whatever else we're
looking into it. Meanwhile, I suggest you use the custom Sieve script our
SpamBuster team built which should stop those email from appearing in
end-user email boxes.
And, no you don't have to update your Modus build to get the latest Virus
definition. You may get weird error messages if something goes wrong during
the update, but it won't keep you from updating.
When we can confirm the updates are going out we will inform you so that
people with the error messages can try it again and report their results.
Regards,
