Is the server left to sit, or are you doing period graceful restarts? Does the memory usage of the system stay relatively constant? In particular, does the Apache parent process memory usage stay constant? Do load spikes coincide with when Apache server child processes restart? Having LogLevel of info will show when mod_wsgi is doing start/shutdown stuff.
