Messages from within Land Rover are a bit mixed, with some suggesting that the
Defender will continue to be built in RoW, (Rest of the World), specification
for some time to come, probably in India. The recent engine change was to meet
the next diesel emission standards for the EU, so there has been some internal
talk about a less expensive engine for non-EU countries. (some have even
suggested a return to the 300Tdi, but I cannot see how that would be possible).

The DC100 has been floated as the basis of two model lines, firstly, a leisure
vehicle and secondly a utility vehicle to take on the likes of the Toyota
HiLux, (sometimes known by my army friends as the Taliban Troop Carrier). There
is a brief mention of this in the June issue of Land Rover Monthly, with quotes
from John Edwards, the Land rover brand manager.

It's worth remembering that the DC100 in the various guises displayed is a
styling mule based on a Range Rover Sport chassis frame; its looks are
indicative of the direction intended, but the mechanical specification is a
long. long way from the anticipated outcome.

I love my LR 110 CSW, but in its current form it is hugely expensive to build
as the labour content is colossal, quality inconsistent, the crash protection
is truly terrible, (don't roll one!), its cramped, too un-aerodynamic, thirsty
and easy to steal. What makes it attractive to me as a vehicle to keep for ever
makes it a real nightmare to build in a mass production environment.
