Ref the squeal. I had this problem in the 1980's with a Rover 2200TC. The problem, in my case was down to cheap brake pads. I believe I remember a comment that the new pads etc had been fitted before you acquired the car.
Before you embark on the cost of adding a servo, it may be well worth while changing the pads and shims for known high quality items. Others are better qualified than I to advise on the best choice.
