Thanks for that. It stirred a few memories of one who was reared on Seafires
( the Navy`s version of the Spitfire). Later I was on Seafuries with
Centaurus 18 Cylinder radials and then Fireflies with Griffon engines. And
we didn`t have the luxury of electric starters either, it was cartridges.
One bang and you got about two rotations. In those days we young air
mechanics had to start and taxi the beasts. `Elf and safety would have
something to say about that nowadays.
Send `em off flying and sit in the sun and polish the BSA till they came
back.

A Spitfire would cruise at about 5 mpg. That's probably better than you'd
get from a car. Several people have put Merlins into cars over the years. I
believe they'd have been quite pleased to have achieved 5 mpg. 2 - 3 is
more likely.
