I am no expert on this, (and there are others here who are much better than I ) but he must go back into his account and change the password immediately. He should then send an email to his contact list warning them of the spam as a courtesy, and telling them not to open the messages with any links in that purport to come from him.
I would also update his anti-virus/firewalls and then run a full system scam to clear out anything that might still be resident in the computor. He might want to considering ditching this particular email account if the above do not solve the problem. Some web based email accounts are very prone to this , especially Hotmail.
