I remember going to Lincoln from Huddersfield by train in 1981. Seeing all the 
catenary equipment collapsing in the yard at Penistone seemed such a ridiculous 
waste, as did the reversing tactics needed to get the train into Sheffield 
Midland station. The journey would have been so much easier if the old GC route 
had been open all the way.

The 1500v DC system also was an excellent energy saver, with trains on the 
downgrade generating much of the power for those going up the Pennines.
