Had a similar problem when fitting a relay in circuit with the thermo switch in my 4/4 after I had a succession of the latter burn out when trying to carry full starting current to the fan. The relay would chatter. Once the starting current flowed through the fan motor, the voltage dropped too low for the relay, so it dropped out, now the motor was off and voltage returned to normal, so the relay kicked back in. And so it chattered, but never ran the fan. Running a new, separate feed to the relay solenoid and not powering it from the ludicrously thin cable used to supply the motor solved the problem.
Use separate cable feeds for solenoid and motor. Clean all connections (how are the connections between the tags on the end of the cables and the cables themselves?) and check the battery. How old is it? If it's hit 8 years, replace it. Which reminds me... Cheers, Owen. ----- Original Message ----- From: Brian Cowell To: mogtalk2 Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2012 9:15 AM Subject: [mogtalk2] Moss Box +8 starter A fellow SpotMogger with a Moss Box +8 has a problem with the starter solenoid pulsating. It works properly with a direct electrical feed. There is a relay between the starter switch and the solenoid. The solenoid also works if the relay is bypassed. As you might expect, the relay output lead is thicker than its input lead. He asked me if the relay could be dispensed with. I pointed out that the starter switch may then suffer from carrying too much current. Any thoughts anyone?
