It is log to the base 10 of the reciprocal of the hydrogen ion concentration., or minus log base 10 of the hydrogen ion concentration (mathematically the same thing), the hydrogen ion concentration being measured in moles. If the liquid is neutral, it should be 7.0, since the solubility product of hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion in pure water at STP is 10 to the power -14 and these two must be exactly in balance for the solution to be neutral. Is that now as clear as a lignosulphonate drilling fluid?
