you can have as many alerts/upalerts as you wish per period. the alerts
are simply pushed on to a list, and there is a separate list for each
period.

true. maybe you were thinking that you cannot have several period
definitions for the same service with the same name or time period.
the periods are stored in a hash which is keyed by the "name" of the
period (such as "MAIL:"), or if that does not exist then the key is the
period spec itself (such as "wd {Sun-Sat}"). if you wish to have two
periods for the same service with the same period spec, then you must
give them both different labels.
