I don't seem to have a copy of fping installed anywhere handy at the moment,
but I suspect that fping -s output goes to STDERR rather than STDOUT.

You can test this (in the Bourne shell type world):

 fping -s > t.tx 2>&1

or in the C shell version:

 fping -s >& t.tx

If your output shows up in t.tx, then have a look at the perl 'open'
function documentation for various ways of handling this in perl.
