Initial Comment:
OS: RedHat Linux AS 4
GCC: 3.4.6

1.setup:
CREATE TABLE A (a DATE);

2.execute:
INSERT INTO A VALUES (
  DATE '9999-01-01' + INTERVAL '1-00' YEAR TO MONTH);

3.result:
select * from A;
+------------+
| a          |
+============+
| 10000-01-0 |
: 1          |
+------------+

4.question:
"10000-01-01" is not a correct DATE.

(Admittedly, we cannoth predict whether or planet, let alone our
civilization, will still exist, then, but the date itself looks perfectly
correct to me...)

Or does the SQL standard limit its calender to 4-digit years, or so?
