wow, fast response :)

I wasn't sure if it was a gentoo bug, I searched bugs.gentoo.org but found nothing
that was like this problem.

and ya, I checked the /usr/lib dir. All the dlls are in there :/

I just got my friend to emerge mono and mcs works for him. I don't know what is
up with mine. .....trying.....trying..... :P

K, just resolved it. Though I feel shaky about why this resolved it:
emerge -C mono gtk-sharp
which mcs returned a hit so I d/led the monocharge and
cd /;rm -Ri `ls ~/monocharge-20031026/*`
emerge mono
mcs --version

and it worked. *shrugs* to this one but it worked so I am happy. I didn't
emerge gtk-sharp or monodoc yet though :)

thx,doug

Two things:

1) Using a gentoo package, I would suggest filling a bug at
http://bugzilla.gentoo.org first. We (the gentoo developers) appreciate this
as it might very well be a bug in our packaging. We (the mono developers)
also appreciate this because it allows us to spend time nailing down mono
bugs, not downstream packaging bugs.

2) As to the specifics of the actual problem, I am not 100% sure, but I
would make sure /usr/lib/System.dll exists first.

Subject: [Mono-list] Installation Woes (Could Not Find Assembly System)

Hey,

New to Mono, spent all nite rtfm and searchin this list. Can't seem to
resolve this:

Every time I try to invoke mcs (even mcs --version) I get

WARNING **: Could not find assembly System
cannot open assembly /usr/bin/mcs.exe

I have emerge mono gtk-sharp giving me mono 0.28. I was gonna do the
CVS thingy
but I can't even compile a hello world app let along a compiler right
now :P

Sry if I missed the answer somewhere, thank you for the help
doug
