Sorry, I know that you said "MySQL or Firebird", but I don't know the
status of that providers. In the other hand you have PostgreSQL that is
a very good database and you can have a few providers (Npgsql, ODBC and
PgSqlClient).

You can try ODBC for MySQL... and I saw firebird driver in a page...
