I think that the recent talk in the press about a new version of SuSe is concerning Nat Friedman's comments about SuSe Desktop Linux. I am almost sure that particular version of SuSe is not available through conventional distribution channels yet.

As far as SuSe 9.1 and Mono 1.0.1, I personally think is very stable and remarkably easy to install when you use Red-carpet. You are right about needing ONE and only ONE tar file -- mod_mono. However, it is a marked improvement over versions of Mono prior to 1.0 in terms of installation and interaction with SuSe 9.0 or 9.1.

I will be waiting outside of Fry's Electronics doors at 5:00 AM the day that SuSE DLN is available for purchase. :)

I don't know how stable it is. The first thing I tried was to install Mono
1.0.1 from the RMPs on the www.mono-project.com website. YaST2 would not
allow me to install all of them. I switched to Red Carpet and everything
installed perfectly. However, I still need to download the binaries and tar
them to get the README files for the configuration details. Also, I have no
idea whether my machine is still stable. I just got through installing all
the Mono stuff from Red Carpet at 1:30 AM this morning, so I still don't
know how well it is working. I have to go to work now, so I won't know
until this evening whether any of it actual works.

My whole purpose in using Mono is for ASP.NET, so Mono .30 that comes on the
distribution disks for SuSE 9.1 Professional is not going to do me much
good. I bought the product because it is a Novell product and I just assume
that it will be a good bet for Mono development, since Novell now owns
Ximian, etc.

So far, it looks like SuSE 9.1 Professional is a good choice.

Thanks Carl,
I may give that a shot. It's weird though Suse/Ximian/Novell etc. are
all
tied together, why wouldn't they put their product (1.0 and above) on the
distribution? 3.0 always installed anywhere I tried it,it's when you try
to
add the other libraries to get some windows forms development done that it
becomes unusable. Once again thanks

I just bought SuSE 9.1 Professional on Sunday and it comes with Mono .30
on
one of the CDs, but you have to install it using YaST2. I ended up using
YaST2 to install Red Carpet, and I used Red Carpet to install Mono 1.0.1.
I'm still in the process of configuring the machine. I don't consider
that
to be "pre-installed", but it's still a nice Linux product. I would
highly
recommend it, but don't think it's going to be as simple as "pre-
installed".

I read in the trade journals that there is a new Suse distribution
that comes with mono pre-installed. Is this true?
