Please, no.... Fix the distribution versions and help them package it correctly (Debian), but please... not source. The only possible reason I can justify using a source install is if you are a developer. Using your package manager allows easy upgrades, rollback, and the distribution will make sure things such as plugins, paths, binary, image, documentation locations work (at least ubuntu does) with the rest of the distro.
