Many thanks, After you confirmed it was NVIDIA I did another check and found a release candidate for their 260.24 development driver on this page: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cuda_3_2_toolkit_rc.html
I can confirm that stopped my pausing issue. It also resolved another issue where the combination of OpenCL and raising an exception in MonoDevelop would completely lock up the MonoDevelop process.
