Microsoft's CEOs have made it "patently" clear (http://swpat.ffii.org/players/microsoft/index.en.html)[ffii.org] that they intend to restrict competing .Net implementations by cultivating Microsoft's patents, such as United States Patent Application #20020059425 "Distributed computing services platform" [uspto.gov] [uspto.gov] which covers the design and inter-operation of .NET based implementations.
