Thats the way i had done this, like the Github Demo activity.
I think this is the easiest way to go.

Yep, I have some sample code here that uses the content provider:

I haven't tried it yet, but the latest beta of the Mobile API added
contacts support which I imagine makes it much nicer to work with:
