Thanks all for thinking with me. I ultimately pinned this down to a piece of
code that initialized a WCF proxy, and which was being called from 3
locations at the same time. On startup, for saving away a notification
device ID, and also while 2 views were being initialized.

I guess this is a combination of a threading issue and possibly the GC
causing problems. I cleaned this code up a bit and made it more robust. Now
the app is running OK.

Would be great if Xamarin did something about this in MT's next incarnation
