It could be unrelated to the bug report (but it's not 100% safe to assume the linker will remove the code causing the issue).
To be certain about this please fill a bug at bugzilla.xamarin.com and include a small, self-contained, test case that you're sure cause the same exception (copy/pasting the code causing the error is often not enough to duplicate). You can also try with 5.0 which does not suffer from the regression.
