This might be a little late, but I have a ReadyNAS drive on my home network that I expose through my firewall, and have the Subversion plugin installed on it and then I can commit to it from wherever I am from my laptop. Works very well for me, MD works seamlessly against it.
I always opt for Subversion for version control, its free, straight forward, reasonably well supported and many, many companies use it (+jira and confluence etc).
