Hi, I also use MonoDevelop on a MacBook with VS running on a virtual machine. No issues with the setup to speak of. The VM works so well I use it for everything, and only switch back out to the Mac when MonoDevelop work is required. This approach also works fine so far for WP8 development in a Windows 8 VM.
Are you using VMWare Fusion? If so, consider updating or reinstalling VMWare Tools. You'll also probably need to do this if you upgrade VMWare.
