FWIW, Macgregor has recommended "shroud adjusters"
instead of turnbuckles on the Venture17 because of
that reason. Of course, if you have upper and lower
shrouds, that can be a bit of a problem.

One suggestion that I would make is to try using
either the plastic split "wire loom" (ribbed conduit
like tube that is used for routing wires in vehicles,
etc. available at many home centers, Walmart,
AutoZone, etc.). Get a size large enough to fit
around the turnbuckle, cut the length long enough to
use as a "flexible splint" to hold the end fittings
aligned w/ the axis of the turnbuckle. (i.e. long
enough to go from bottom of turnbuckle past the top of
the turnbuckle and up a bit along the shroud. Use
these to hold the bottoms of the shrouds aligned w/
the turnbuckles until the mast is up. Then remove and
stow them. (unless you really don't care what your
boat looks like underway) This thought occurred to me
after I used a pc of split foam pipe insulation to
protect my deck from the shroud adjusters banging and
scraping while trailering. Seems like it should work.
If you try it, let me know.
