In this day of high-speed connections? But hey, they say they auction 250 lots per hour -- Wow, that's one item every 15 seconds! That's awfully fast for a live auction. What's the rush anyway? They've been advertising this auction for months now, but and when it comes down to the close, they only got time to spend 15 seconds taking the last bids? And what about those phone bids... how do the people on the phone manage to respond in those 15 seconds... much less respond again and bid again... then respond and bid again... and what about those fax machine bids? I guess their fax machine has a really fast printer on it, to be able to get in a competitive bid in that 15 seconds. But, hey, the pokey old high-speed internet connection really isn't up to the challenge, I guess...? Look, if any of the above fine print strikes y'all as a fair way to run an auction, please contact me. I have a some nice Florida acreage I need to sell and the only fine print is that they require just a "little" drainage to be ideal home sites... 2) Apparently if I bid on the item directly on the Heritage website, I pay a buyer's premium of 15%. But if I place my bid on one of their items through eBay, I pay a buyer's premium of 20%. No explanation given for the difference. That's just the way it is. What they are doing, of course, is charging me the extra 5% to pay for their eBay listing. ... y'know, one time on my auctions I said that those who paid with PayPal would have to pay 2% extra to cover half of the 4% PayPal charges me for taking PayPal payments. When I did that, eBay TERMINATED my auctions less than 12 hours after I posted them and sent me a stern warning that I was NOT ALLOWED to charge any extra percentage to cover my eBay or PayPal fees. But I guess Heritage gets a special deal from them. Rank has it privileges... So what Heritage is doing here is using eBay to ADVERTISE their auctions. They are not REAL eBay auctions, are they? They don't close on eBay, nor do they follow standard eBay guidelines for what you can and can't do with an eBay auction -- and my high bid when it "ends" on eBay may not be the high bid when the auction *really* closes... or if it is, Heritage reserves the right to reject my high eBay bid and award it to another bidder "at its sole discretion"? Plus... for all of the above "benefits" I get to pay an EXTRA 5% to cover the cost of eBay letting them float these mirages on eBay in the first place? 3) In addition to the buyer's premium (which I continually raise on myself whenever I raise my bid), unlike normal eBay auctions, Heritage has a special bid increment scale for me to use. When I place a bid I must go over the current bid by at least the following amounts: < $99 bid increment is $1 $100 - $249 bid increment is $5 $250 - $499 bid increment is $10 $500 - $999 bid increment is $25 $1,000 - $2,499 bid increment is $50 $2,500 - $4,999 bid increment is $100 ...etc. these are approximately DOUBLE eBay's normal bid increments. ... so, if the item I want goes over $100, I will have to bid over the current bid by at least $5 bucks... I mean at least $10 bucks if it goes over $250... no... I mean $25 bucks if it goes over 500... but hey, once we're bidding over $500, and paying a buyer's premium of 15%... or is it 20%? ... well, anyway, what's an extra $25 bucks between friends at that point? But hey, what's my beef here anyway? What am I, some kind of cheap skate trying to chisel hard-working auctioneers out of a few well-earned dollars? Heritage has some really nice posters for auction that they are already charging the owners of the posters 10 to 20% to auction them off for them, so why am I complaining about them want to pick up another lousy 20% or so? This is stuff I can't get anywhere else, after all. I mean, I can't get this stuff anywhere else, right?
