I think a huge number of people will have "home theaters" in the next 5 to
10 years -- they probably won't think of them as "home theaters", but
that's what they will be. With the price of a 30"-to-42" HDTV plasma screen
dropping very fast, and the advent of new speakers which are very small in size
but very *big* in sound -- what we used to call a "home theater" is simply going
to become the "standard modern television system" for the low-middle class and
above (at least in the US and Europe and Japan).
At that point, there will be no reason to go to a theater to see even most
blockbuster effects-films -- and then I think you will probably see the
expensive mall space in the mega-plexes being broken up to make room for more
boutique and chair retail shops.

I would agree with this point JR makes. It's the
blockbuster movies that
will keep theaters around. Although video and
dvd's are nice, there is nothing
like watching a movie on the big screen
with all the flash and booming sound.
Spiderman just isn't the same on dvd,
and I believe most people will never
have home theater systems.
ie: (one day I found my big speakers, which were on
the TV/VCR/DVD/Stereo,
in the garage .... the wife said they took up too
much
