If the story is true, it sounds like at least one studio is getting tired
of theater employees hijacking the posters they send to the
theaters for advertising purposes and slipping it out the door into their
own personal collections or selling it on eBay or to a poster dealer --
sometimes before the movie is even released! After all, as far as the studio is
concerned, they want these things hung in the theater lobbies for advance
publicity -- they are not trying to provide material for collectors in the case
of banners (which are very pricey to produce compared to one sheets). People
realize that while the standard release one sheet poster will be available
for sale over-the-counter by the millions, that the banners are not likely
to ever be produced in any form other than the original studio printing. For
most films, because of the huge size of the banners, this doesn't matter to most
people. But in the case of a super-hot title like the STAR WARS movie, I'm
guessing that the banner is *very* cool and wasn't actually getting put up in
many theaters, but was mysteriously "disappearing" the second it arrived.
