Phil and all,

 

First of all, I wanted to mention that I have a few minor items ending tonight -- a few 3-sheets including a colorful Bird Of Paradise starring Debra Paget, and a few re-issue/reprint items. I don't much mess with re-issue items, but wanted to clear these few items out, thinking they might be of interest to some horror/sci-fi collectors. A couple are Portal repros, but I haven't seen them offered before on eBay -- one is more or less a blow-up of the best original Frankenstein lobby card (montage), the other a Day The Earth Stood Still 3-sheet (both of these are 20 x 28). The last is a 1994 re-issue 27 x 41 1-sheet for Day The Earth Stood Still with new artwork by Robert Rodriguez. I'm not exactly sure why this 1-sheet was issued, but it could have had something to do with the laser disc release in '95. It is a gorgeous poster, and I haven't seen it on eBay before either, but I don't watch that closely. Here's the link:

I also updated my site yesterday ( http://www.coolcalmandcollectible.com ) and added a number of nice window cards including Affair In Trinidad and The Birds, as well as title cards for The Big Sleep and The Petty Girl. So much for the plugs.

 

On to eBay. I've had more than a few unpleasant encounters with them over the years, all which emphasized the fact that they are "in control". And Phil, you are so right about their FY attitude. My most recent experience, this week, involved the posting of my website link on my "About Me" page. Let me preface this by saying that earlier last year (and don't ask why!) I wanted to get rid of my Power Seller status -- and I hadn't sold much of anything on eBay for 3 or 4 months. Finally they sent me a warning on 1/15/04 that I would lose my Power Seller status if my sales didn't pick up. Despite still not listing anything, it took them a full 2 months (3/17/04) to revoke my PS status. I then started selling again in April '04 and was later deemed worthy of the coveted Power Seller logo. In November of '04 I started working on my website and was sidetracked to the extent that I again sold very little material on eBay.

 

Anyway, this week I started an About Me page and posted my website link there. Within 12 hours of this, I received a notice that my Power Seller status was revoked!!! No 2 months warning this time -- in fact no warning at all!! I didn't even go from a "Silver" PS to a "Bronze" PS -- just straight down the toilet to a common slob non-power seller! Woe is me!!Coincidence that this happened 1/2 day after I posted my website link? Not a chance -- this was purely spite. Honestly, I don't give a rat's a$$, as I have no evidence -- nor do I believe -- that my power seller logo ever brought me one extra bid or one extra dime. But -- if this logo is such a holy symbol as they would have you believe, and aids sellers in more sales and higher prices -- with that mentality, wouldn't this action hurt them as well as me? I find it all very curious, and again I really don't care one way or the other about having that oh-so-important emblem next ! to my ID and feedback rating. To me it seems like a childish, vengeful act on their part -- to penalize me for choosing a website over an eBay store, or for daring to want to sell items outside of their jurisdiction. What these people need is some good healthy competition, but I fear that will never happen. There is nothing quite as ugly, or dangerous, as a monopoly.

We are in the process of removing ourselves from eBay other than a minimal
presence, and moving our auctions to MPB. It's a process, but I am sick and
tired of this monolith's "fuck you" attitude to the sellers who support it
