I really wish you had said something to me first -- before bringing it up
in public. We take non-paying bidders very seriously on MPB and if a seller
reports to us that someone has not paid we will send them an "official reminder"
asking them to respond immediately. If they don't respond, their membership will
be terminated. Usually, they respond quickly and arrange payment. But this has
only happened maybe 4 or 5 time in the past year -- so I am bewildered that you
would be experiencing "a lot of non-paying bidders" on MPB -- how about
contacting me with the details and let us try to solve the problem? That's what
we do at MPB -- no automated email responses to either buyers or sellers with
something they need resolved, but personal service.

Again, I have to point out that your idea that there are no posters in
the middle ground at MPB is simply wrong. There are plenty of posters that
sell in the $30 to $70 range on MPB. There would be even more if additional
sellers would participate in a regular and meaningful way.
Unfortunately, the conclusion you reach for yourself in your message
below is the conclusion that many sellers reach -- and so they create
the very situation they are complaining about on MPB. They want a guarantee
that they are going to get their price if they list on MPB -- well, sorry,
but you don't get a guarantee on eBay either. Not without a reserve or a
starting bid that reflects the true minimum you'll accept to part with the
poster. Given the testimonials from people who have had success on
MPB -- and the year of successful operation MPB has had -- I would
think that more sellers would be willing to take the *tiny* risk
involved in putting up quality items at a starting bid that was just a bit
below their true minimum and give the auction format and marketplace a
chance to work -- and help build up that audience they say they want to see
on MPB --and help expand and improve a specialty shop addition/alternative
to the expensive mess on eBay.
Instead, most would rather complain about eBay and just "wish" that MPB
would do better.

First off, I appreciate all of the
comments both to the group and in
private. Second, I would love to see
MoviePosterBid succeed. I really
admire your efforts. I would much
prefer to participate in specialty
auctions. I wish that there was a
way to get more buyers and sellers to
join. I just did not see
the enough sales and bids at the present time
to support the auction. I
was not contending that the 4 or 5 bids out
of 500 meant that
only 4 or 5 posters would sell. My point was that the
lack of many
bidders was indicative of a low number of viewers or a
lack of interest
in the items offered. I realize some people for
various reasons
like to snipe items at the end. However, I cannot
understand why anyone
would bother sniping a cheap poster with no bids
on it. You would
run the risk of losing it if you are not there to
place the last minute
bid. I do not like to buy or sell on ebay but
so far it has
been the only way to go. t seems that at the present
time, there are no
middle ground items being offered. Either they are
some higher priced
items with high opening bids or cheap items that
people were just
clearing out. Most of the posters I look for or want
to sell, are
somewhere in between. I have a large number of nice
linenbacked
daybills and Belgian posters. I would prefer to list them
without
reserve but I do not want to give them away. If I did what most
do and
put a higher opening bid on them, I doubt that they
would
sell. Hopefully things will improve for your site and you will
get the
number of buyers to make it worthwhile to list this type of
poster.
