David and Rudy -
I agree with both of you.
And we live in New Jersey and my husband works in lower Manhattan. We
lost a good friend on 9/11 - an engineer at the World Trade Center.
Time seems to gloss over important facts and Rudy has, thankfully, set
the record straight. Bush and his team responded to 9/11 as they
respond to everything else - by looking at how things can benefit them
politically. Sorry, that may be an incredible statement but everything
I have seen from this administration points that way.
Bush finished reading his Goat book to school children (where he was
reading to them for a photo-op) before he even responded to his staff
member telling him that the Trade Center had been struck. And then
Cheney spent his time hiding out in bunkers. I also remember how Bush
& Co. used the 9/11 attacks as material for their campaign ads when
they were running. So much so, in fact, that it drew harsh criticism
from the 9/11 families.
And also think about how funding is decided. NYC got LESS funding for
protection against terrorism than certain red states out west that had
powerful Republican senators lobbying for them. Federal funding for
strengthening the levees and protecting New Orleans against hurricane
and flood damage was CUT with the full blessings of this president.
Consider the parallels - NYC votes solidly democratic as does New
Orleans. These facts was extremely disturbing and impossible to
ignore.
These poor people need help right now. Inane remarks like those made
by Dennis Hastert regarding restoring New Orleans and President Bush's
"sunny" comments about being stronger after this is over show us what
is in their hearts. And it's not pretty.
