Just found this example on eBay's help site under "shill
bidding":
Bob is a
high-volume seller on eBay, who wants to be sure that he never sells
at a loss. Rather than use eBay¹s ³Reserve Price² feature to set
his minimum sale prices, Bob has an associate place bids on his
auctions... in effect, setting a hidden¹ reserve price. (End of
quote)
eBay's shill bidding policy clearly prohibits a seller's
employees to bid on that seller's auctions, no exceptions.
Then again, as we all know, anything eBay cares about is making
money, so some sellers may be a bit more equal than others.

Ron and all,
I've expressed these same opinions both on MOPO and on the late Movie Poster
Talk about shilling many times. You cannot be run up if you exercise your own discipline
in bidding. Decide what you are willing / want to pay ahead of time and stick to your plan.
Because you cannot control all this other stuff. It's the only way to buy something for the
price you want at auction. There is no other way.
