Yes, it is... as is THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN HUR, KING OF KINGS.... one
can make a very long list if you put your mind to it.
Never understood the obsession some folks have against remakes.
They are only movies. Sometimes a remake is great, better than the
original, sometimes it's terrible.
Some folks thought the WAR OF THE WORLDS was a terrible remake, some saw
it as a far better adaptation of the themes of Wells' original novel
than Pal's 1953 version. Some people think the original 1953 version is
a "classic", others don't.
It's all a matter of perception.
Peter's LORD OF THE RINGS was a remake, too, in a sense, of the Bakshi
animated version. As for his KING KONG, I'd prefer to wait and see the
movie before I make a decision.
There will be plenty of time after for movie snobs to debate WHY it was
so terrible, or a travesty of "Obie's vision" and they might even be
able to back it up.
Jackson remaking the film, and having such a heavy involvement in the
additional material for the DVD release might be smart marketing on his
part, but it's also going to lead alot of kids to seek out the original.
I suspect that many movie geeks are simply jealous of Jackson. He does,
after all, have one of the best and biggest collections of KONG
memorabilia in the world.
Give the guy a break, please. He's the fan who got to make his dreams
come true, from shooting 8mm in his backyard to creating in RINGS one of
the few genuine epics of the movies, right up there with the great
German silent films, to now being able to pay tribute to the movies and
movie makers - Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen that insired him in
the first place.
