I've never said Ang Lee was *bad* director. Not at all. Just overrated, and
I'll stand by that wholeheartedly. The two films he's most noted for here
(aside from the recent Bareback Mountain) are Hulk and Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon. Both overrated films (CT,HD much moreso) and my biggest
complaint was that he took all the fun out of the Hulk. Not saying a comic
adaptation can't be dramatic, but to make it ALL drama and zero
fun...bleecchh. He just took a great existing story and tried to make it HIS
story, which was a bad idea.

And of course this is all just my opinion.

Cheers,
Erik

Well, fine. Many of us said we disagreed: Tarantino *isn't*
a great director. Interesting and talented but not great. The
number of films isn't why he isn't great. It's that he's all flash
(and big mouth).

You keep pointing to The Hulk to prove Ang Lee isn't a great
director. I'm not sure if I'd include him as a great director
(though I think he's better than Tarantino) but just because a
director has one stinker in his past (or even a few) doesn't
mean they aren't great. I'm sure we can each find at least
one rotting fish amongst the oeuvres of every one of the
directors you listed. Spielberg has Hook. Scorsese has
Boxcar Bertha or New York, New York. Et cetera.

What makes a director great is hard to define but one or two
"misses" isn't -- or shouldn't be -- the deciding factor.

Craig.

Ok, All the attention has gone on how many films and QT, that wasn't my
point. My point is that Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin
Scorsese, Bernardo Bertolucci are all great Directors and have earnt the
respect as "Great" directors

Maybe Quentin Tarantino wasn't the best example, but he's still a great
Director, whereas I don't think Ang Lee is.. Very very over-rated. I'm not
saying he isn't good, just not great.

The attention was soon diverted from "Hulk" too, lets talk about that
shall
we? No thought not...

At the end of the day Ang Lee had to pull something out of the bag after
making Hulk, maybe he has done just that with a contreversal film such as
Brokeback Mountain, afterall it is the hotest topic at the moment.

Tarantino - 18 films.
So why was KILL BILL sold as "The Fourth Film by Quentin Tarantino".

Having one's name attached to a film as a producer, executive producer,
associate producer or even screenwriter
does not infer that person "made" it.

Nor does it even infer that they had anything to do with the creative
process at all that produced the final result... and that includes the
screenwriter. In some cases it can even mean the director.

And of course Henry is absolutely correct about Terrence Malick.

Now, what about that chap, Orson Welles?

Terrence Malick - only five films, I think. Pretty damn good director.
