Evan and Saul!

A very well written commentary about a truly great poster of the 1960's!
The first time I saw the one sheet for The Miracle Worker years ago it
instantly grabbed my attention. Why? Because it was very unusual for a movie
poster, very disturbing and a really riveting design. Whoever designed it did
a wonderful job and the poster falls into the design school of Saul Bass - who
did the three sheet for Anatomy of a Murder (a black and white photographic
design- similar to The Miracle Worker on a lot of levels). So- why should Saul
Bass posters sell for so much and then a great sheet like The Miracle Worker
fall by the wayside?

It seems like a case of "pack mentality". People see the Bass posters sell
for a lot of money at auctions so they feel safe purchasing the same posters
for the same prices. We never see The Miracle Worker turn up at major auction
sales. Why? Because consultants to auction houses see results like the one
Evan mentions ($10) and that will definately keep it out of a larger auction
house. This poster will continue to be considered "worthless" until someone
pays an outrageous price for one at Sotheby's, Christie's, Heritage, etc. - if
it ever makes it into one of their sales. Every now and then, the larger
auction houses do try new titles like this and it's always nice to see.
Sometimes they do well and sometimes they don't. But I give them credit for
trying new titles!

So- before they do go up in price, try to find a nice copy and put it in
your collection! It really is a great one sheet! Saul and Evan- you're ahead
of the game!
