Hello all...
In my experience in having an account at the Boston, MA, NSS from 1948
to 1985 (when it closed), the Inserts and Half sheets were stored flat
and shipped rolled.
As a teenager in the summer of 1952, I was employed by my local movie
house as an usher and general gofer. One of my jobs was to change the
Lobby Displays twice a week, where the Half Sheets and 40x60s were
always unfolded.
In the early 70s, when I was picking up an order in the NSS Shipping
Room, the Manager, who first served me in 1948, informed me that the
company was trashing all their 50s Half Sheets to make to make room
for new material. I was taken to the basement and told I could take
whatever I wanted. There they were, stored flat, vertically on
shelving: Half Sheets from FORBIDDEN PLANET, THIS ISLAND EARTH, SOME
LIKE IT HOT, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE et al., some titles in multiple
copies in both styles. I paid 50 cents each for them.
At about the same time, a museum in the Boston area notified me that
they had been give a pile of 50s half sheets as a gift, and had no
interest in them. In fact, they were taking up valuable space. These
were all unfolded from the Independent Poster Exchange in > Philadelphia.
Ordering Half Sheets and Inserts from the Theatre Poster Exchange in
TN and Movie Poster Service in OH was a different story. They were
always sent folded.
Mike
