I think that its not so much that DeNiro is over-rated, as much as his range
is limited. I honestly think there is a difference.
Some of DeNiro's performances (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Dear Hunter and
more) could only have been achieved by the finest of actors with the
greatest of talent, but it appears he can only excel in portraying
characters of complex personality but limited intelligence.
He's much less successful when tackling a character of great intelligence
and/or sophistication. An example would be his performance in Wag the Dog,
which was totally unconvincing, bordering on embarassing.
In addition to that Deniro has made many poor choices as to the parts he
accepts. It almost seems he lacks, or does not exercise any critical
judgement in this department.
