I can speak for Fox since I set up their Archives in the 1990's and ran
the show for 10 years.
Not much documentation before 1992 when we began the cataloging process
- millions of dollars worth of material was kept in a variety of
storage rooms around the world. It was a fun search putting it all
together.
Fox now has a record and deep archival storage for most all that we
found in storage - plus key items that were purchased for their
collection during my tenure. Don't think there is too much push to
acquire these days, but I hope I am wrong about that. Wanted to
institute a "trade our dupes for your items we don't have program" -
but that never panned out.
We took 4 x 5 trannies of a great deal of material.
And we created a visual database -
And yes - an image can be called forward -
but it is an internal process and not really open to the public -
Or if money is driving the time expenditure - such as a request from
licensing and merchandising.
My sense is that the other studios are pretty much in the same place.
But again - I hope things have progressed over the past 5 years since I
left the service to become a civilian once again!

Mopo,
I was wondering if the studios kept records of the
promotional material used for their films. Does anyone
know?
For example, if someone from WB or Sony Pictures
wanted to look up an old poster from the 30's, could
they?
Would they still have the material used? Or at least a
photograph record of the poster/lobby card/stills from
their library.
