If I want to bid on an item that has a reserve, I'll email the seller
and ask what the reserve is.
If the seller doesn't want to say what the reserve is, that's fine,
that's their prerogative as part
of the reserve auction M.O.
Once a reserve has been reached I'd then put in a snipe. I wouldn't,
however, put in a snipe hoping that my
snipe might both crack the reserve and beat out other bidders
simultaneously.... unless that figure was the absolute top
I would want to pay under any circumstances... and proved to be the
successful bid.
There are plenty of sellers who regularly use the reserve process
because they like it. Not all are using it for nefarious purposes,
although no doubt some do. I guess it's also how one defines a
"nefarious purpose".
