A very enjoyable and thoughtful meditation on GIANT, Kirby. Much appreciated.

Watching FILM MAKER'S JOURNEY makes revisiting all of Stevens' films worthwhile. Even when one knows them quite well in some senses, understanding the kind of man that directed them certainly gives some new perspectives.

His WW2 experiences were quite horrifying, and there's no doubt there was an impact on the sort of films he made. While not in quite the same way, the James Stewart before and after WW2 certainly made some interesting choices in roles and characterisation that one couldn't imagine him touching before his wartime experiences.

Kirby says it all here--- with the imprimatur of the True Texan.  I also admire the Stevens Jr. documentary-- one of the best of its kind.
Thanks, K.

In Texas we honor GIANT, while realizing that GIANT is a kind of love
song to the myth of Texas, the Texas that even Texans have never quite seen.
I don't believe that any other film pays homage to the idea of any place
in quite the same way.  Ferber tried to repeat her success with ICE PALACE -
about Alaska as you may imagine.  The book was a best seller but few people
remember it today.  In fact, when was the last time anyone read GIANT?  What
made the film so memorable was the cast and the way the script grafted the
idea of stubborn individualism to the notion of tolerance and acceptance of all people.
To understand Stevens' motivations I recommend watching GEORGE STEVENS: A FILMMAKER'S
JOURNEY by George Stevens, Jr.

Hi from Joe B

I believe that George Stevens' GIANT is one of the truly great American films.  Edna Ferber's book was an entertaining best seller by as Tennessee Williams put it, "a successful writer of impersonal fiction."  Stevens turned it into a cinematic masterpiece that pays tribute to a great American state without masking warts!

For me, THE GRADUATE has always been the perfect example of an exceptional film made from a mediocre novel.  A lot of the dialogue is lifted but the direction and performances lift the film to another level.
