It's true fewer people are going to the theaters... as we've discussed on
this list before... because they have bottom-lined the experience into a
pain rather than a pleasure. The blasting sound from the film in the next
auditorium bleeds into your auditorium. The seats are generally butt- and
back-busters. They now show 30 minutes of commercials before the film... and you
paid big bucks to sit through them. The concession stand charges more than
a fancy French restaurant. The auditoriums generally have a very iffy smell to
them. And in most auditoriums the "big screen" seems noticeably smaller
than the Big Screens I remember. As someone said a while back "Movie Theaters
used to be palaces. Now they are warehouses".
And, of course, they keep pushing up the date of the DVD release. It is now
only 90 days from the theatrical release date. How many films these days are so
good you can't wait 90 days to rent them and watch them your own home for a
lot less than the price of a first-run theater ticket? They should have kept the
time from theatrical release to DVD to at *least* 6 months... 9 months to a year
would be better. But they're all too greedy. They want all their money *right
now* and so have strangled their golden goose in an attempt to get it to cough
up the return on their investment quicker.
Then, of course, there is the small fact that most of the films they make
aren't worth watching, even at home rental prices.
They've killed their own business. They can't blame the viewing public for
any of it.
Now they think 3D will save them. Seems to me I've heard that
solution touted once or twice before in the past...
