Roland and Michael, Absolutely. This is a great example of what not to do if you are "martinjurb". In this day of sniping it is a *terrible* mistake to put in your real maximum amount in the early bid. That's suicidal if there is going to any significant interest in the item from others. You can put in an bid just to "test the waters" and stake your claim to first-bid status and maybe try to gauge interest. You might even make the hidden maximum on your early bid an amount that is part-way to real maximum amount you're willing to pay, but that's all. You enter your REAL maximum amount in the sniper program. Otherwise a sniper (or a shill) can just keep running up your bid -- and either flush out your maximum and win by a smidgen more... or simply make you pay more than you would have otherwise.

Look at the bids on this 2001: a space odyssey postcard. If martinjurb had sniped, stranamore1964 would of put in a bid of 46.99 at 8:25:06 and would be the high bidder until martinjurb sniped and won for 47.99 instead of paying 97.99. > > http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=9144560910 > > > > > Michael B <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: i have asked, rhetorically, before: I DEFY ANYONE TO TELL ME A SINGLE ADVANTAGE IN BIDDING EARLY. > > the only time that i have seen it work is when a well known bidder meets a high reserve early (where it implies, rightly or wrongly, there's a lot more available because this person REALLY wants it), where it acts as a deterrent from those seeking a "steal". > > (i was surprised to get an item 2 years ago when my snipe had already been placed for 760, the reserve was met at 400 4 days before the auction ended....and i got it for about 746. the auction showed the 400 for 4 days,,,,til the very end with 2 other snipers besdes me. it was THE BISHOP'S WIFE insert.) > > all new ebayers are shocked by sniping, when they think that they "got" the item for a few days, until reality sets in during the > > i, also, collect french enamelware on ebay. check this link of 2 novices outbidding each other: > http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6286138009&rd=1&sspagen ame=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 > > wouldn't it have sold for less had there only been snipers? i might have bid on this as a snipe, but................the true value of this item was lost in the bidding frenzy war. > > > > > > Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___________________________________________________________________ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content. > > > Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com > ___________________________________________________________________ > How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List > > Send a message addressed to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L > > The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.
