About 15+ years ago I saw a film program at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, consisting of about 15 films, screened over a period of a couple weeks. The films shown were late silent and early sound Japanese films of Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu. I was stunned to see American 1-sheets of the period prominently displayed in at least 6 or 7 of the films. I forget the specific titles of the posters, but I had seen actual copies of a couple of them, and at least a couple were of prominent titles from 1920s.
I've always been puzzled by this. To my knowledge, neither director had traveled to the United States. My guess is that silent films were likely shown in Japan, either with translating the intertitles, or not, and that American posters were sent with the films to aid promotion. Mizoguchi and Ozu might have had an appreciation of American silent film, which was at it's peak in the late 1920s, and were paying homage to American film history. Marty Davis
