This question is really much more interesting than the current thread. I offer
this feeble explanation for my own collection habits.
And, I should add, I am one of the very very few people in the state of
Colorado who actually has a three sheet on the wall -- so that makes me an
expert!
First, eBay (the whole internet actuall) has really made it particularly clear
just how varied in quality the artwork on posters from the 50s-70s is. A vast
majority of it is frankly pretty plain. At 3sh+ it just gets worse -- not only
ugly, its got big litho screen dots! Before eBay, I would buy posters for my
favorite films, hoping that the dealer would adequately describe the image on
the phone (no really, its great!). Now, I see just how much is available,
whats great, whats not so great -- and I stay far away from the mundane.
Basically, if I don't think I will EVER put it up, I'm not going to buy it.
Frankly, "e287 FOREVER FEMALE three-sheet movie poster '54 Ginger Rogers,
Holden" is never going up on my wall (and I would be suprised if it ever went
up on ANYONES wall).
Second, its a pain in the butt to swap out a 3-sheet in the frame I have. Not
so tough for 1 sheets -- which I try to swap out every couple of months. I've
had "Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer" 3-sheet up for a couple of years now. And
when it comes down, "e466 PLACE FOR LOVERS three-sheet movie poster '69
Dunaway, Mastroianni" isn't going up in its place! Since I only need about 1
per year, I only buy about 1 per year -- so, I'm holding out for "e464 PILLOW
TALK three-sheet '59 Rock Hudson, Doris Day".
Evan.
